San Lorenzo River Parkway Trestle Trail Phase III

The 350-foot-long San Lorenzo River Trestle Bridge connects pedestrians and bicyclist from the Seabright neighborhood to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The work consisted of replacing a narrow 4-foot-wide bridge with a cantilevered 10-foot-wide steel bridge.

90,000 pounds of steel created the superstructure along with 3,500 square feet of lightweight steel integral fiberglass reinforced plastic decking. The guardrail spanned east to west with a cable rail infill material and included architectural lighting at the posts.

Two critical picks representing 35 tons of steel spanning between the west abutment and the first pier were completed with precision. Each of the W30 beams picked were roughly 75 feet in length.

Because the project was over the San Lorenzo River, Cushman designed a scaffolding system that cantilevered north of the San Lorenzo River Railroad Bridge to capture construction debris and also provide a safe working platform.

Despite an extraordinary amount of rainfall and heavy winds, Cushman finished the project a month ahead of schedule and under the City’s budget.
